Hi guys, I've been working through the quest book for a couple of weeks and keep hitting dead ends where I can't go any further because I cant get the material I need for crafting.

Are there any guides out there to assist me through some of these?

Depends on what you need? Which quest are you stuck on and I can try and guide you through it as I'm active over there.

The NEI should show the materials needed to craft things; however, some may not be listed for instance the magic mods. Some of the magic mods you will need to look in the corresponding magic book for the item and materials needed to make it. A quick google of "Minecraft Infinity <Item Name>" could show what materials are needed as well.

Remember there is a wiki with almost every object and an explanation about how to get it and what it does, just search the object's name in google

Thanks for your ideas. My big challenge is obtaining obsidian for some crafting. I have my smeltery set up but seems I need a steel pickaxe to break obsidian blocks. but can't make steel without a blast furnace, which needs lots of ender pearls. At least I have found a Nether portal at an abandoned base nearby so at least I can get to the Nether......

Make a bucket and gather lava from the nether. Make a hole put the lava inside and then pour water over it. If you have a smeltery setup start working on a pickaxe that can break obsidian. Cobalt etc. I believe tinkers construct has a lot of different material pickaxes that you can start out with that will break obsidian.

You can chisel obsidian in the world and it removes the requirement for obsidian level mining.

Or you can make obsidian in your smeltery and cast it as blocks.

Or, if all you need is a portal you can pour water over lava to make the frame.

Something I never thought about doing, Making a mold for the MyM portal then pouring lava and make the portal without moving anything but maybe cobble or dirt.

Sometimes vanilla ways are the best ways :). I normally do it that way on expert packs because it tends to be a little easier, sometimes faster. I'm looking at you regrowth.

Where are you looking at ? I can't see it :(

Obsidian in Regrowth was easy, water and lava in a VAT, tap your foot a couple of times, *makes the microwave ping sound* obsidian done !

ps: the ping sound isn't needed, just a habit ...

Thanks Wyndman. I've tried to use the smeltery but cant work out how to get water into it to mix with molten cobble. tried to melt snowballs but no good.

Just tried a Bronze level chisel with very little effect. any idea what material to make one from?

Nice idea about the portal though.......

Ok you can click a bucket of water on your smeltery drain, and do the same with lava they will mix in the smeltery to become lava. The other way I like to do it because who wants just want block, is to make a ender io tank and fill it and have it push in through the drain, you only need one tank they're cheap since they only need iron and glass.

Chisel is just the stick and iron ingot, not the tinkers version ;)

You could just make a pick that can break obsidian. Using a diamond on a tinkers pick should work. Maybe a bronze pickaxe.
