I removed Dame from the list and will add the other ones sometime this weekend. It's still the chance to suggest something ;)

Did you change Warlock - Witch?
Because I did some researching and Warlock is more powerful than a witch, and actually isn't the equivalent at all, a witch is unisex also.

    • Warlock —> traitor, scoundrel, liar, this was used as an insult and a threat on runestones— "Anyone who defiles this stone is a warlock". Magic in the Germanic world had connotations of being sneaky, indirect and deceiving in the way it worked, and men were taught to be honest and direct with each other. I do not know if this is a natively Germanic stigma or a change instigated by Christianity to stamp out pagan practices.
    • Witch —> wicca (m) wicce (f) The old english word for someone who practices witchcraft. Back in the day it was more socially acceptable for women to practice seiðr than men. Witch is actually a unisex word, and had been used as such even into the colonial age.
So in theory there, Warlock is a male only name, and there isn't a female term.
Could we remove Warlock and add Witch?

JacaRoe, I am impressed with your detailed post and it makes me wonder if you're studying something like history or linguistics. Your post leaves it so that I've got nothing more to add, haha, but just wanted to compliment you for it. Personally I don't care much for the definition of the female/male ranks either, but your "research" there makes it easier to implement something suitable for those who do.

Well thank you, that's appreciated. I have no secret, I'm just old. lol No, I've had a decent education in nothing in particular over several years and I've tried to sample many different perspectives throughout my lifetime. I also have a passion for information, and the internet feeds that quite nicely. Thank you for the compliment. :D

This is all good research, Ben. I was trying to convey that point earlier, but I tend to ramble (as you might have guessed LOL). Thanks for your clarification.

    Well, now.

Dame is regionally relevant. It is the literal feminine of Knight in the UK, where it pretty much all started. I don't know how that got all twisted up in American vernacular, but keep in mind, that's also just my perception. YMMV.

I suppose if you wanted to redefine it for the purposes of fair titles, you could go with Hero/Heroine, which imo is something of how I view a Knight and his role (and it's also got that cool RPG feel).

Also, on redefining: A quick Google search took me to Wikipedia, where "Warlock" just happened to redirect to "Magician." That wouldn't be a poor substitution. Magician (or Mage?), is also a unisex term and would not require gender specification. Incidentally, World of Warcraft suggests "Warlock" is also gender-neutral, so I suppose it's all about one's perception.

The article also suggested that Sorcerer/Sorceress would be a valid substitution for Warlock/Mage/Magician and still give it the somewhat sinister feel that Warlock brings with it. Again, perception.

I also found an article on Demigods, who did refer to the feminine as Demigoddesses (jeez, that's wordy), but since there weren't many of them in Greek Mythology, I don't think it was a very relevant term, for what that's worth. Some feminists would probably disagree with me.

So those are my random thoughts on the matter, if you choose to take any of them into consideration. Personally, I think the rest of the list is fine. As always, I appreciate all that everyone does on/for this server, regardless of these little things. :)

Why? We don't need the exactly female name for it. We want a alternative name to the current titles for female players. If someone don't like the title Warlock or Witch then he don't have to use it.

But I thought this thread was regarding that females have an option for when they also get a title.
the ontime for Warlock is fairly long, shouldn't it be fair that females get to change from warlock also, considering it's a while until the next one

When a female player gets to (certain) ontime, quite a high ontime, I don't think they're expecting to only have the option 'warlock' when it's not unisex, especially since this is the chance to suggest changes.

If you're talking about the titles/ranks, it is:

I think SirWilli is saying that "witch" would be the feminine alternative to "warlock", which would remain in the rank position it is at now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I read that.

Witch is completely unisex, males practise witchery today even so, but warlock is a maled word.

Oh, nonono I understand what you're saying, and I agree with you. In literal terms you are 100% correct. What I was saying is that I interpreted SirWilli's post as saying that for the purpose of the game, Warlock would remain unisex (the way World of Warcraft uses it), which would require no feminine alternative.

Again, that's only my interpretation, and maybe it's incorrect (that's up to SirWilli to clarify lol).

But overall Ben, as I posted earlier, I agree with your assessment that "witch" is unisex. I know witches IRL, and that's how they roll. :) They also have no "warlocks" whatsoever, anywhere in their vernacular.

You could always change warlock to wizard and the opposite would be witch? Since that's how they do it in Harry Potter.
