I am currently building my AE network and was wondering what is the smallest drain on wiring?

For example, is just me glass cable less of a drain compared to the dense cable and controllers?

Well in general, the fewer tile entities you have in your base, the lower the lag will be. So even though the AE tiles don't tick themselves, you might still be better off using dense cables instead of multiple parallel glass cables. But I don't think it will have a big impact on overall performance.

I am trying to keep the cable down to a minimum by using the cable from as many machines as possible in one run then linking into a controller

that should not be that bad, a multiple controller p2p setup is also fine from what i understand (sometimes it's required lol)
