I've been on MYM Infinity for well over a year now and I think it's time that staff look into the Language filter and make adjustments. This filter is filtering out words like crap and piss but leaving hell and others. I was informed by a Sr.Mod that this is just how it is, that this a children friendly server, and that hell is not a swear word. This staff member was highly combative and making wild assumptions as well as to the basis of my question. I felt threatened by the fact that I was asking a question as to why one is considered a swear and the other is not. In a private message to a staff member, but the staff member brushed it off as if I was debating and being raucous.

I, in earnest, wanted to know why. Upon research, only two of the aforementioned words are found to be on a list of english profanity (as this is an english speaking server.) [As described here: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:English_swear_words]. I would like to propose that the language filter is updated accordingly as to preserve the image of a children friendly server.

    Thank you for your time.

I mean, this is just my opinion.
I personally think it is okay to swear, ONLY if the word is being used correctly.
But if it's used as something bad, then it shouldn't be okay to use those kinds of words.
Even on a "children friendly server", but like I said before, it's just my opinion.
Anyway, I hope no one has gotten offended by my comment. :/

I dont want to see the filter go away, just to be clear. I want it to be consistent with profanity lists that make sense. I want to preserve the image of a child friendly server. But filtering words like crap but not hell or even arse is not living up to that standard.

I strongly urge you to use the link provided HERE to create a complaint against the Staff member who failed in their duties. Rest assured Senior Mods will not be able to read the complaint, only Managers, Admins, and the Founders can read them. It is not acceptable for any staff member to make a community member feel threatened, and for it to have been a senior moderator only makes matters worse. Higher Staff will look into the situation and hopefully, make sure the staff member involved is at least talked to.

Other than that, I agree that the swear filter needs some attention.

    ProperChilli and HelloKittyPhone like this.
  5. On that note, language filter on AoE does not hides the words, it only gives a warning.

My honest oppinion is that your post should be in private bugs to prevent people from exploiting this and spamming with profanity.

Hell, while considered profanity is also the coded name for the Nether, which is why it is not censored by the filter. It does seem a bit hypocritical to use two words that are blocked by our chat filter to inform us that there is a word you feel should be blocked. While Hell will remain uncensored, and believe me we've gone back and forth on the argument over the word, it always comes back to the fact that the word is displayed within the game itself.

No chat filter will ever be perfect, I regularly have to wash my eyes out when reading chat logs due to the vast array of trolls who filter in from other places choose to address our community.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to report the issue with the staff member here. To allow us to investigate the matter further. To avoid further debate over the use what is considered offensive I am locking this topic before it goes off the rails.
