Suprisingly! I have a life outside of Minecraft which is being a full time nursing student (currently in my second year). Today in my Psych II class we were discussing effects of social pressure and blah blah blah. I mostly just tuned out and thought about what I would work on in my base once I got home and could play.. but then I started thinking about the concept that was being discussed and applying it to the MyM network. It goes a little something like this: People have a tendency; and rather distinct nature, to follow orders given to the my "authority figures". A really good example of this would be back during WWII. The normal right-minded person would never think to do cruel, inhumane things to another human like concentration camps; but given the command by a higher authority to do so allowed said people to believe what they were doing was correct. So my application of this idea to the MyM network is something that I have noticed a few times. Here is my example: --- ->Lost Soul Ben1337thegreatnoob - Hi guys! I'm a noob, could someone explain to me how to get power from my survivalist generator into my machines! ->Saint Chugga_fan - Hey; I would suggest Extra Utilites Energy Pipe or Thermal Dynamics Leadstone Fluxduct. They are cheap and good for starting out! ->Lord of the Hammer o' Banning BookerTheGeek - Sup ben! I would definiatly suggest the Extra Utilites Hyper Energy Transfer node or the Cryo-Stabilized Fluxduct ->Lost Soul Ben1337thegreatnoob- Omg! Thanks Booker; Ill make those! PS: This is obviously not a real story; I just made it up with extreme examples to make the idea easier for the reader to understand. --- Now; lets review that conversation. While we all know @chugga_fan is never correct about anything, in this one situation what he said was actually the better suggestion, much cheaper, and a legit solution for the new player starting out. @BookerTheGeek did provide a "working" answer, but it wouldn't be an obtainable option for the new player. However, because of Booker's presented authority figure in-game, the player @BenS1337 chose to follow the suggestion given to him even though it is clearly the worstof the 2 options That's about it No criticism/hate to any of the players mentioned in this post; you guys are all great. I just wanted to share something I learned and how I found a way to apply it to the server during my 3 hours of extremely boring class time
I agree that your premise is correct, but your example is kinda sketchy. Ben the noob has no way of knowing that Booker's answer is any worse than Chugga's answer, so you cant really say that he only followed it because of the authority figure. If anything, it reminds me more of peoples tendency to use the last suggestion / reply to the last message. Now if Booker had added: "They're kinda hard and expensive to make but I like them", then the situation becomes more like you're describing [DOUBLEPOST=1427256535,1427256246][/DOUBLEPOST]Theres also a famous experiment that looks at obedience towards authority figures, although in a more direct and significant way Milgram experiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
this is how life is like for humans though. if people are smarter (teachers, goverment etc) people will always think there answers are the right ones. since they are placed in there role for a reason and since they are in the role that they are in means they should know what they are talking about. like what you said about that the staff answer isnt the best for that sistuation, they will still do that since they are sopost to be the smartest people in the modpack. now if there are not people that will go against the answer and argue that its wrong then. if you really think about it though when you join a modpack that you never have joined before and you ask a question, you get the mods answer and you get some players answers no matter where the mods answers you will go with there answer since they are sopost to be the "teachers/smart people" even if they are completly wrong. so i agree with this all together it would be nice if it isnt that way but it is. it also doesnt help that staff names stick out and when chat is getting spamed you will go to the answer that you see first.
$5 says i have better methods of doing thaumcraft than you [DOUBLEPOST=1427326919,1427326846][/DOUBLEPOST] the bounty is on me, the next mod that finds me doing something bannable gets to ban me for the tenth time XD
what if i get banned for something i was framed for? like someone hacked my account, checkmate logic! also, then what happened to my first, 6th, and 8th bans XD, (i compress my bans, because i got banned 3 times in one week because i used my teammates blood altar... yhea fun story, then the first ban i don't remember if i had a forums account during, and the 2nd ban was prob my most deserving ban of a 100% permanent, and A LOT of people on the server abused that bug, it's ridiculous and prob still infects that mod)
Fool me once, my bad Fool me twice, your bad. So your saying all but one of your perm bans were invalid? Just saying.
fool yourself 3 times shame on you it's the "greifing a blood altar" string of bans that are really invalid, the rest i can understand as bans
