optical illusions FTW!, and if definitely is going down due to the position of the cat and the light at the top proving the camera is facing upward but i see both but know why it's going down
Its going down since most stairs have a little lip to the top of the stair and then go inwards. And for the stairs to be made different then that would look bad and more anoying to walk on.
It's going up.. If that was going down, them stairs would be dangerous as.. wow "Randomly walking upstairs, OH NO I FELL DOWN A HOLE.. oh nvm there's a random stairway there.."
Your right when I turn the corner I don't look and see what's there before I walk. And you can't see how deep the stairs are so they might not be dangerous at all.

I had stairs like this leading to my basement in my old house and this looks like the picture was taken at the bottom of the stairs
If you look at this picture I just edited, you can see that the wood sticks out for a bigger step and the design on the stairs wall. Therefor proving it is going down. Spoiler: Edited Picture
I didn't use common sense. I just looked at the cats back fat going forward. Wich means it's going down. also if you watch a cat going up a stair they usually carry their tail low, if they are going down they usually carry the the tail high cat psychology 101
i used to have 4 and my neighbors across the street have alot more, like 9, and we have nothing compared to the people who have the most, in one house 654 cats live
