    So I was planning on upgrading my computer and wonders if anyone has any insight into what I have chosen, or any improvements that could be made.

    Current PC Specs:
    Intel Core i7-3770K, EVGA GeForce GTX 680, NZXT Phantom (White) - System Build - PCPartPicker United Kingdom

    Planned Upgrades:
    Intel Core i7-4790K, EVGA GeForce GTX 980, Cooler Master Storm Stryker (White) - System Build - PCPartPicker United Kingdom

    Changes that I am making:
    • GTX680 --> GTX980
    • i7 3770K --> i7 4790K
    • GA-Z77-D3H --> GA-Z97X-Gaming GT
    • Phantom case (White) --> Cooler Master Storm Stryker case (White)
    Thank for reading :)

    just on a small note evga 9xx series has issues with cooling, its best to skip them for the 9xx line.

    (I wouldn't upgrade, 680 runs all latest games just fine with medium to high settings)

    NZXT cases are amazing. I already had two and both very great, sound proofed and high quality cases

    Ash, I have a 4790k, GTX 970, 16gb ram, h100i cooler, Asus? Z97 motherboard. It has destroyed whatever I throw at it. The 980 is a waste of money. I love my PC.

    Is it just the evga 9xx gpu's? or is there another type I could purchase?

    I got r290x and didn't find a game to match it yet.

    I have the evga 970. it has had no issues with cooling. Having a good flow of air in the case is important. I have 6 fans total.

    I just felt like upgrading as some of the minimal requirements for some games I plan on purchasing are near the GPU I have. Also im doing this for a college project. As well. I could always purchase more fans like you have Crazar :)

    GTX 980 is like £460-500 atm, the 970 is like £260-300 by comparison, if you want real power and can afford it then get 2 970's and sli them and you'll get a lot more power/£, unless you plan to get a second 980 to have in sli further down the line.
    As slind said tho there are reported issues with the evga 9xx series not having the heatsink properly aligned causing heating issues, so possibly consider an ASUS/MSI/Gigabyte version instead unless you have strong brand loyalty to EVGA!

    From the parts list you linked, the one main suggestion I would make is to go for a gold/platinum rated power supply instead of bronze rated as they're a fair bit more efficient so will actually save you money on your powerbill in the long run.

    All the parts listed are not 100% accurate to what I have now. I just couldnt be bothered to check :p What brand would you suggest between ASUS/MSI/Gigabyte? hmm I might consider the SLI, money isnt really an issue so I could just get another 980 later on.

    The CPU you have is already overkill for gaming :p You're not going to see much if any improvement with a new one, unless using really CPU-intensive programs designed to use that many cores at once

    I just feel like having a change so im not to bothered :p Im just trying to decide on SLI with 970's or just get a 980 and get another one later :D Also out of MSI/ASUS/GA ive been doing some reading and it seems like MSI is the best...

    Not currently as it has a speed of 4.0GHz but in the future I could get a water cooler and do that. I was under the impression that overclocking will decrease the products life cycle.

    lol it doesn't, my laptop was surviving for like 6 years before it broke... from someone kicking a basketball, the entire time it was overclocked

    Anecdote =/= evidence

    Overclocking (uprating) an IC by using a clock that is faster than the one recommended by the manufacturer, seems to be an obvious way of reducing an IC’s lifetime. Devices running above their specifications are not to be expected to survive as long as non-overclocked devices.
