Where was the claim at? If it was in the farmworld, nether, End, or various other dimensions, it may have been a world reset.
"Expert" mode is harder. You get less per craft, some crafts take more items, etc.
Whenever the quest book breaks, they all have to be reset. Unfortunately, the only solution is to try and have the supplies set aside ahead of time.
