I want to introduce my friend to modded Minecraft. What’s a good starting pack for him? I was thinking DW20 (not the 1.10 version) might be a good one. Suggestions don’t necessarily need to be packs with MYM servers.
    Thanks!

Depends on how old. And whether you want some kind of a questbook pack.

Many consider Agrarian Skies 1 a good pack to get into modded minecraft. But is getting old at this point.

Kitchen sink packs have the benefit of giving early access to every mod, but you can get a bit lost between all the choices. A progression pack at least gives you guidance on how to progress.

If you want a kitchen sink pack, just pick any. DW20, Infinity, Tekkit Legends, it doesnt really matter.

He is fairly new to Minecraft in general so a skyblock may not be preferable. And I will be playing with him to help him learn the mods as well.

Personally, I'd say Revelations. Not a skyblock, nor a questing pack, so you and your friend can explore mods as you wish. Revelations gives a variety of mods so you can see what he's interested in and go from there. Also pretty populated, so you'll have people to talk with and trade if you wish to do so.

Well I mean, if you play together and you give him some guidance, then a kitchen sink pack is probably the best. At this point I would recommend still one of the 1.7 packs.

I learned from playing Agrarian Skies 2 for modded minecraft, but I had already had a deep vanilla and skyblock background. Land based you could always try Direwolf if your friend isn't averse to watching direwolf20 videos on his pack.

Honestly I would start with revalation as most packs going forward are going to be 1.12 packs.

i find 1.12 packs are not a good place to start, best to start with the best packs (1.6.4) then goto (1.7.10)

My first pack was monster. Overwhelming at first definitely. However, seeing all the possibilities really gave me a appreciation for Minecraft that I did not have before. Monster was great for me personally because it had all the tech mods I could ever wish for while also have the Twilight Forest, which was basically my progression mod for that pack. I could progress in the Forest, and when it got to be to hard I could go back to my home base and work on other things. If I had to give a recommendation I'd say infinity, but I'm biased to it because its basically all I play. Good luck to you and your friend, hope he enjoys his time with the game as I have!

Honestly, it doesn't even matter. If you play together and you take the time to walk your friend through all the stuff instead of doing it yourself and putting him in front of a finished ME system, you might as well pick Infinity Expert, Divine Journey or Project Ozone Kappa.
