I've been playing on the Monster server for a few weeks now and I'm a little disappointed that it's a rule that only English can be spoken on the server. I live in Australia and naturally speak English but as I understand, the server is based in Europe, so why can't non-English languages be spoken? I prefer to speak in Esperanto to communicate with people who aren't very proficient with English but if there's a rule against speaking in other languages, then I feel like risking being banned by trying to communicate with non-English speakers :/ Is there a reason there is the "English only" rule on the Monster server or is it just arbitrary? Cheers.
English is the primary language on monster so we ask that everyone who can speak English (even if not brilliantly) do so in the public chat so that everyone can understand what is being said... if different subgroups all started having different conversions in different languages then it creates a fractured sense of community which isn't what we want. That doesn't mean if you want to speak to someone specifically in a non-english language, you can't do so in private messages, and you can even use McMMO's party system to talk to a group of people in a non-english language without it showing up in public chat for everyone else.
Okay I understand what you're saying, thanks If a conversation in a different language started while no-one else was talking, should the conservation be continued in private messages or is it okay to continue in that language? I.e. if the majority of the text chat is in a non-English language, is it okay for it to continue being in that language or should it be kept to English as much as possible for people who might join for the first time? I know how there are sometimes around 3 or so conversations going on in the chat so I'm wondering if language makes a difference here, as far as languages/conversations go?
My personal opinion is that while it is preferable if you stick to English as much as possible, if chat is quite quiet anyway then there's no real problem if you want to exchange brief comments in another language but if you want to have a proper conversation or if other people start to have a conversion in English then switch over to private messages.
Alright that's fair enough. It's just that the rule in /rules seemed very concrete, but no-one seemed to care much in global chat what language was being spoken unless it occupied most of the chat space. I would suggest that the rule in MC chat be edited but I can't think of any way to shortly explain that any language can be spoken on global unless the chat itself is quiet. I guess it'll be something that's only brought up when a new-comer doesn't speak English as well as other languages. Thanks for your help
According to the rules I would prefer to stick to english all the time in the global chat as another staff member (me included) could see it different. Setting up a mcmmo chat isn't difficult and helps to keep the main chat more clean.
