I'm trying to start a fire for boiling a kettle over top of. Not sure why I can't get anything to light. Tried everything I know how to do. Lit it on Netherrack, lit it on a block of wood, lit it randomly out in the open. Everything was shut down within a second of the lighting. What the heck?

To light a block you need to insert a flint and steel into a dispenser pointed at the netherrack and connect a redstone signal with a lever or button to the dispenser and it will light the netherrack in front of it.

  3. you can use an igniter from thermal expansion or your wand(if you have the required research) to make a fire too.
